A Lover is Fragile
Sultan-ul-Ashiqeen said:
A lover is fragile. He annihilates everything in love. All his strengths and treasures perish, and he is left weak. Love arrives at the place that is void and where everything has been sacrificed. Allah says:
لَنۡ تَنَالُوا الۡبِرَّ حَتّٰی تُنۡفِقُوۡا مِمَّا تُحِبُّوۡنَ
Meaning: You can never attain to piety unless you spend (in the cause of Allah) out of that which you like the most. (Quran 3:92)
The word برَّ is written in this verse though some translate it as a pious deed but it is the name of Allah. At another instance, it is written in the Quran:
فَلَا تَتَّخِذُوۡا مِنۡہُمۡ اَوۡلِیَآءَ حَتّٰی یُہَاجِرُوۡا فِیۡ سَبِیۡلِ اللّٰہِ
Meaning: And do not take (any of) them as an ally until they forsake their homes for the cause of Allah. (Quran 4:89)
Therefore, a lover is left empty handed after sacrificing everything. On negating everything, Allah ascends the throne of inward. Affirmation occurs after negation. (The family, relatives, friends and acquaintances rather) everyone around the lover advise him against love quoting that it is mere naiveness and others claim that he is under a spell etc. Yet a lover does not listen to anyone and sacrifices everything. The fire of this ardent love is so intense that it burns the bones. It is fiercer than the fire of hell.
Mistrust or suspicion
For purification of the self, it is inevitable to get rid of suspicion as it arouses in the inward of a man. When one mistrusts then it is hidden in the inward. The other person is clueless when one is suspicious of him. This is illness and it is not new. In sura Fath, Allah says:
وَ ظَنَنۡتُمۡ ظَنَّ السَّوۡءِ ۚۖ وَ کُنۡتُمۡ قَوۡمًۢا بُوۡرًا
Meaning: And you imagined a highly evil speculation and became a people bound to perish. (Quran 48:12)
It is in sura al-Hujurat:
یٰۤاَیُّہَا الَّذِیۡنَ اٰمَنُوا اجۡتَنِبُوۡا کَثِیۡرًا مِّنَ الظَّنِّ ۫ اِنَّ بَعۡضَ الظَّنِّ اِثۡمٌ
Meaning: O believers! Shun such suspicion; for some suspicion is a sin. (Quran 49:12)
The Holy Prophet said, “Protect yourself from suspicion as nothing is more baseless than it.” (Hadith)
It is a baseless accusation. Its seeds are sowed in the inward. One has become suspicious of a man standing in front of him. The first step is that one becomes suspicious, the second step is that one distances from the other person and lastly one breaks relationship with them.
What is the extreme case of suspicion? To mistrust the perfect spiritual guide. Satan attacks a disciple by sowing the seeds of mistrust in his inward about the spiritual guide. It is a spiritual ailment and it requires purification. If one has evidence against the other person then he should opt for some other method instead of mistrusting. Mistrusting has a huge role in breaking relations. Even in families, there are elements of mistrust often caused by a backbiter. What a backbiter does? He hears something, adds to it and tells you the corrupted version. What the actual words were? What was the intention of the speaker? Why he said it? What was his purpose? The backbiter would not disclose any of it. For example, I say that Naeem is a sharp person. What I actually meant was that he is an intelligent man. A backbiter will go and tell Naeem that I was calling him shrewd. This will create mistrust in Naeem’s inward. It has been advised to not mistrust. In the book ‘Sufism-the Soul of Islam’, this spiritual ailment is also discussed in detail. A person repents on committing a sin but mistrusting is such a sin that one does not feel the need to repent. One always claims that he has done the right thing. A person repents of the sins committed out of lust of self as he remembers them but does not repent of the sins committed out of different spiritual ailments. One even dies with these sins. These are such sins from which purification of the self is must.
The Holy Quran states:
قَدۡ اَفۡلَحَ مَنۡ زَکّٰىہَا
Meaning: Indeed, the one who purifies his (inciting) self succeeds. (Quran 91:9)
Purification means to take out all these things from the inward. If these idols are in the inward, a man cannot recognize Allah. What is meant by the purification of the self? To get rid of these spiritual ailments as is written in the book ‘Sufism-The Soul of Islam’. When one gets rid of these ailments, he is purified and who is the friend of a purified man – Allah Almighty.

A Seeker Dies before Death and forgives the spiritual guide for it
Someone posed a question to Sultan-ul-Ashiqeen, “Sultan Bahoo quotes that a seeker surrenders his life to the spiritual guide. What does this mean?”
Sultan-ul-Ashiqeen replied by quoting a verse of Allama Mohammad Iqbal:
اقبالؔ عشق نے مرے سب بل دیئے نکال
مدت سے آرزو تھی کہ سیدھا کرے کوئی
Iqbal! Ishq Na Meray Sab Bal Diye Nikal
Muddat Sa Arzoo Thi Keh Seedha Karey Koi
Explanation: Loving Allah is not easy, it comes with its own obstacles. Love has eliminated all of my personality’s flaws. I wished for a long time to be corrected (by the perfect spiritual guide because without him no one can achieve purification of self and reformation of personality). (Iqbal and Faqr)
A spiritual guide purifies the seeker and this process involves trials. Even when a spiritual guide descends wrath, the seeker accepts it happily. A true seeker is the one who stays firmly with the spiritual guide before and after wrath. Compassion is accepted by everyone but only a true lover happily accepts the wrath.
When a Seeker feels Truly content?
Someone questioned that when does a seeker feel pleased and content? He answered: A seeker feels content when duality ends and union is achieved.
Everyone should Play the Part
Sultan-ul-Ashiqeen quotes:
It is obligatory onto the scholar to guide the umma on physical aspects of the religion. Other than these scholars are aamils (so-called spiritualists). They are not even Muslims even if they say they practice the magic of light and not black magic. They deceive people by blowing on knots and by writing talismans claiming that their work shall be done. As such are the seekers of world as opposed to seekers of hereafter and seekers of Allah therefore only seekers of world visit them. Even women claim this post and God forbid many women have joined this trade… Remember! Visiting them is polytheism, sitting in their gathering is polytheism and these people are not even Muslims.
On the other hand are spiritual guides. He is assigned only one task and if he exceeds the limit then it is also not right. His calling is to make a man closer to Allah. He only has its knowledge. If he is a spiritual guide, perfect and accomplished, then he only has the knowledge to grant man gnosis of Allah and purify one’s self. He should not do any other task. Similarly, a scholar should do his assigned work.
I have talked about aamils because they have become spiritual guides in Pakistan and India alike. God forbid! They claim to get things done by magic for naïve people. Only Allah (takes one out of trials and) helps (a person in need) whereas these aamils are giving guarantees for the same.
Does a Seeker chose Spirituality or is He Chosen by the Spiritual Guide?
Sultan-ul-Ashiqeen says:
A spiritual guide choses his disciples. Can a slave choose his master. Sultan Bahoo says in his poetry regarding it:
مڑن محال تنہا نوں باھوؒ، جنہاں صاحب آپ بلاوے ھُو
Murran muhaal tinhaan noon Bahoo, jinhaan Sahib aap bulaave Hoo
Explanation: Those whom the Lord Himself chooses for love, their deviation from this path (of Faqr) is impossible. (Sultan Bahoo-Punjabi Poetry)
The word ‘Sahib’ in the above verse can be understood in any of the following ways: Allah, the Holy Prophet or the spiritual guide. As it pleases all of you then let’s take its meaning as Allah. Though the meaning is simple as a spiritual guide himself choses his disciples and calls them towards Faqr. Only those seekers visit the spiritual guide from whom he took the oath on the day of the Divine covenant.
When a Seeker of Allah transforms into a Fakir?
Sultan-ul-Ashiqeen says:
Fakir is that seeker of Allah who dies before death. Death does not mean that he slashes himself with a knife. (What it actually means is death of the self-nafs). Worldly people are afraid of it whereas for a lover it is the elixir of immortality. Those who fall in Divine love are passionate about it. One cannot love someone rather it happens. It is not under the will of man. A seeker of Allah who falls in Divine love becomes a Fakir.
Sustenance and its Provider (Allah)
Sultan-ul-Ashiqeen says:
In love, one should divert attention from the different sources of sustenance to the One Provider-Allah Almighty. It is the Provider who creates these worldly sources. The difference between a seeker of the world and seeker of Allah is essentially that the seeker of world thinks that the sources are providing him with sustenance whereas a seeker of Allah sees only the Provider. Lovers are aware of the fact that many a times Allah gets things done even without a worldly source e.g. the moon was split into two, Prophet Jesus was born without a father and Prophet Abraham’s fire lost its blaze and was turned cold. Therefore, a lover does not need further evidence.
Intellect and Worry
The conversation took a turn to intellect and worries to which Sultan-ul-Ashiqeen quoted:
Intellect and its worries do not belong to the realm of Divinity (alam al-Lahoot) as one cannot reach there due to them. One must annihilate it to reach there. Furthermore, every station is achieved by annihilating (a part of) intellect. My spiritual guide, Sultan-ul-Faqr VI Sultan Mohammad Asghar Ali was admitted in a hospital. It was winter and he said that he wants to eat jujube. Now the problem was that this fruit grows in summer. My mind instantly clicked that in Main Market Lahore, a fruit shop remains open till late at night which also has imported fruit. Nowadays, I do not know much about this shop. I went there and spotted jujube there. My mind was convinced on the fact that jujube fruit will be found because my spiritual guide has asked for them. I bought one kilogram of jujube and went to my spiritual guide to present the fruit.
Divine love is such. What the beloved asked, the lover must give. One succeeds if intentions are pure. When one treads the path of love then one must forego intellect and its worries. A true seeker of Allah gets rid of it on the first day e.g. to worry about children if one dies is not right as Allah is the Provider. Many orphans are being provided by Him and many among them have become kings. What if I do not have money then how will such and such thing will be done is not right as well. Through different scenarios Allah cements trust in Him.
The Game of Divine Love
Sultan-ul-Ashiqeen says:
Fakirism or Divine love are purchased be it by sacrificing the self, going through arduous endeavours or by wealth. Whatever is your way, do it. If one has wealth and does spiritual endeavours and keeps hoarding money then fakirism is not purchased. The wealth is for sacrificing on the feet of spiritual guide, the beloved. Many people of different strata of society have played the game of love. The more well off a person is, the difficult this game becomes. A beggar easily plays it and so does a poor person. The more reputed and well off a person is in society, the more difficult it is to tread Faqr or play the game of Divine love.
Oneness
Sultan-ul-Ashiqeen says:
Oneness is in the realm of Divinity (alam al-Lahoot) but the depth of Oneness is in the realm of Incomparable and Unknowable (alam al-Hahooiyat). A few reach there. A true and sincere disciple becomes annihilated and immortal in the realm of Divinity and it is his world. The tale of man starts from there, therefore it is also called the reality of man. It is a spiritually elevated level to reach both the annihilation and immortality in the realm of Divinity. Man came from that world and it is where he stays with Allah. The levels of multiplicity that start after the realm of Divinity are where man separates from God.
The Divine Secret
Sultan-ul-Ashiqeen says:
The secret of Allah is not known to scholars, pandits and astrologers. No form of knowledge has access to it. Man annihilates when Allah descends His theophany. In the realm of Divinity, the intellect and its worries are worthless. As Allah Himself is there, then how can anyone else sustain there. When He Himself is ascended there, then what’s the use of knowledge. It is the station where the reality of both the Oneness and Prophethood are revealed. When this secret is unveiled on the lover, he cannot utter it to someone. The lovers are bound by sharia, society and humanness therefore, they cannot reveal ‘the secret’.
There are Disciples that bring Joy to the Spiritual Guide
Sultan-ul-Ashiqeen says:
Pain is born of Divine love and it is felt almost all the time by the lover. This pain inculcates in him the desire and this desire is a ride on this path. He perpetually stays anxious for Divine vision and union. Such disciples bring joy to the spiritual guide. Such seekers bear all the hardships happily for the union of the beloved. They commute to the place where the beloved is present. This is my spiritual observation too. Such seekers stay at the doorstep of their spiritual guide to make the most of all the time they have.…………..
