Sultan Mohammad Najib-ur-Rehman’s Method of Guidance

It is stated in a Hadith:

اَلشَّیْخُ فِیْ قَوْمِہٖ کَنَبِیٍّ فِیْ اُمَّتِہ ۔

Meaning: A spiritual guide is among his disciples just like a Prophet is among his nation.

It means that the perfect and accomplished spiritual guide trains his disciples in the same way as the sacred Companions were by the Holy Prophet.

It is the saying of the Holy Prophet:

Meaning: The last era of my ummah shall receive guidance just like you are receiving it from me. (Sahih Muslim)

What was the method of guidance of the Holy Prophet? Did he engage the sacred Companions in daily rounds of recitals? We can find its answer in the following verse of Quran:

ھُوَ الَّذِیْ بَعَثَ فِی الْاُمِّیّٖنَ رَسُوْلاً مِّنْھُمْ یَتْلُوْا عَلَیْھِمْ اٰیٰتِہٖ وَ یُزَکِّیْھِمْ وَ یُعَلِّمُھُمْ الْکِتَابَ وَ الْحِکْمَۃَ

Meaning: “It is He who has sent among the unlettered a Messenger from themselves reciting to them His verses and purifying them (with his perfect spiritual sight) and teaching them the Book and wisdom (the inspired knowledge)”. (Al-Jumu’ah-2)

This verse proves that the Holy Prophet first used to educate his sacred Companions about the Quran then with his perfect spiritual sight would purify their souls so it could be sanctified and becomes capable of absorbing the Divine light of Quran. When the inciting innerself is purified, the soul side by side is automatically cleansed and the sight of the Reality is reflected clearly upon its mirror; which makes it remain restless to have this sight again. This restlessness is basically the beginning of Divine love for Allah and this spark of love is flared up only through the sacred company of beloveds of Allah.

It is narrated by Hanzala Ibn Abi Amir that once Abu Bakr Siddique met him and inquired about his health, “O Hanzala, how are you?” He said, “Hanzala has become a hypocrite.” He replied, “What are you saying?” Hanzala explained, “When we are present in the company of Prophet Mohammad and when he talks about heaven and hell, we feel like we are watching it all with our own eyes and the state of faith in our hearts is such that we do not remember anybody except Allah and our hearts are filled with love for Him, but when we are not anymore present in the company of the Messenger and divert our minds towards home, family and wealth then this feeling and state of heart do not remain the same as were our feelings towards Allah”. Upon hearing this Abu Bakr agreed that he is in the same condition. Hanzala narrates that he and Abu Bakr left and showed up in the presence of the Prophet. Hanzala stated, “O Prophet of Allah! Hanzala has become a hypocrite?” The Holy Prophet asked “How?” He said, “O Messenger of Allah!  When I am present in front of your eyes the condition of my heart is different but as soon as I leave your company and go home or to work I am unable to feel the same emotion in my heart.” So the Messenger responded, “I swear by Allah Who has control over my life, if the state of your heart perpetually remains, as it is when you are with me or in my assembly the angels will shake hands with you while you rest and on the ways you travel, but O Hanzala! This moment is a rare blessing.” (The feeling is blessed upon you only when you are present with me or in front of my sight).

The Holy Prophet once told Umar Farooq that none of you can have your faith perfected until your love for me overpowers your love for your life, wealth and children. Upon hearing this, Umar replied, “Your Highness! I do not feel any such sentiment in my heart.” The Messenger placed his hand on Umar Farooq’s shoulder and asked, “What do you feel now?” Umar Farooq within a fraction of second spoke up, “O Prophet of Allah! Now I feel that your existence is dearer to me than any other thing in the entire universe.” This is to sanctify the innerself by spiritual attention, elevating levels esoterically.

It was beneficence of the all-powerful spiritual sight and company of the Holy Prophet which not only eradicated the faults in the sacred Companions but also made them the reflection of his perfect personality. The generation of Muslims who were born after the passing of the Holy Prophet but who were contemporaries of the sacred Companions (called Tabi’un) achieved sanctification of soul from the company of the sacred Companions. The generation after them (called Tabi al-Tabi’un) got purgation from Tabi’un. This chain of beneficence is continued till today by spiritual succession. As the Prophethood of Allah’s Messenger is till the Day of Judgement therefore scholars of truth, Mystics and Saints will be present as his spiritual successors till then in every age. All these sacred personalities inherited knowledge, morals, piety, faith and spiritual powers from the Holy Prophet. Ghaus-ul-Azam Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani has said:

  • Since the Holy Prophet is not physically present for you to follow, so when you follow the sacred men (i.e. perfect spiritual guides) who are his perfect followers and have always obeyed him steadfastly, it is as if you have followed the Holy Prophet. Seeing them is like seeing the Holy Prophet. (Al-Fateh Rabbani, Section-14)
  • The perfect Saint (perfect spiritual guide) possesses the Sainthood of the Holy Prophet which is the spiritual part of his Prophethood and is granted to that Saint by the Holy Prophet as a Trust. (Sir’r-ul-Asrar, Section 5)

Whoever sits in the company of these Saints with sincerity and pure intentions his soul gets enlightened and his physical and spiritual self is blessed. The Divine light which penetrates their souls has been blessed by the Holy Prophet to the Saints. There are many examples in front of us. When the spiritual sight of Ghaus-ul-Azam Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani was set on the bandits, every member of that group sought repentance. Afterwards, they reached the exaltation of Sainthood. Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal came to know the reality only when he reached the court of Bishr al-Hafi. Imam Abu Hanifa opted for the company of Bahlool (Wahab Ibn Amr) only then he exalted from a scholar to Saint. This point is concluded by saying that whoever sits in the company of Saints is not returned empty handed. It is a Hadith:

Meaning: They are the people by virtue of whom their associates will not remain unfortunate. (Sahih Muslim)

In this materialistic age, people do not have the kind of time where they can perform hard mystic struggles or daily rounds of recitals to free themselves from sensual desires. The truth is that such exercises, if performed in excess, can make the innerselves (nafs) of man more filthy and strong due to arrogance instead of sanctifying. According to the teachings of Sultan Bahoo the best and easiest way to sanctify the soul is the invocation and contemplation of Ism-e-Allah Zaat. Sultan-ul-Ashiqeen Sultan Mohammad Najib-ur-Rehman is the first among the spiritual guides of the Sarwari Qadri order to grant the king of invocations (the greatest name of Allah) Hoo ( ھُو ) to all the seekers on the first day of oath of allegiance. He grants the invocation, contemplation and mashq murqoom-e-wajudia (inscribing Allah’s name on body in a particular manner) of Ism-e-Allah Zaat. It then becomes easy to reach the exaltation of Faqr.

ذکر تصور اسم اللہ دا، سلطان العاشقین کولوں جیہڑا پائے
ھُو دے تصور وچ رہے ہمیشہ، ذاتی اسم او کمائے
مشقِ مرقوم وجودیہ دے نال‘ اپنے تن نوں او پاک کرائے
سلطان نجیب صادقاں عاشقاں نوں، اللہ دے نال ملائے

Explanation: Those who are granted the invocation and contemplation of Ism-e-Allah Zaat by Sultan-ul-Ashiqeen Sultan Mohammad Najib-ur-Rehman remain engrossed in Hoo ( ھُو ) reaching the Divine Essence. They purify their selves by doing mashq murqoom-e-wajudia (inscribing Allah’s name on body in a particular manner) of Ism-e-Allah Zaat. He takes seekers of Allah and His lovers to Him.

Sultan-ul-Ashiqeen Sultan Mohammad Najib-ur-Rehman is practically the exegesis of these words of Sultan Bahoo:

  • Their sight is the absolute Divine light of Oneness and the alchemy of honour. On whosoever the reflection of their hidden Reality is cast, his whole being is transformed into the absolute Divine light. They do not need to engage their disciples in the struggle of apparent daily recitals and mystic exercises. (Risala Roohi Sharif)

This is also the reality that only such a seeker reaches the highest levels of Faqr who truly seeks recognition of Allah Almighty, His vision and eternal presence in the Mohammadan Assembly. Hypocrite, deceitful people, seekers of the world and seekers of the paradise (whose endeavours are for paradise) cannot be blessed with aforementioned.

طالب بن کے عاجزی نال‘ سلطان العاشقین کول جیہڑا آ جاوے
سوہنے مرشد دا لڑ پھڑ کے‘ ازلی نصیبہ فقر او پا جاوے
جیہڑا تینوں بھل جاوے‘ شیطان مردود نوں او بھا جاوے
سلطان محمد نجیب الرحمن روپ اللہ دا اے‘ جو جانے فقرِ محمدی ؐ پا جاوے

Explanation: Those who seek Faqr with humility then such seekers of Allah under the leadership and guidance of Sultan-ul-Ashiqeen Sultan Mohammad Najib-ur-Rehman surely reach their destination in Faqr. Those who negate him get entangled in the web of the cursed Satan. Sultan-ul-Ashiqeen Sultan Mohammad Najib-ur-Rehman is the manifestation of the Divine Essence and all His attributes. Who recognizes him accomplishes in Faqr of the Holy Prophet.

Sultan-ul-Ashiqeen Sultan Mohammad Najib-ur-Rehman strictly follows sharia and similarly guides towards it along with invocation and contemplation of Ism-e-Allah Zaat i.e. to says prayers regularly, similarly fast with consistency, to recite and repeat Islamic creed and send salutations and blessings upon the Holy Prophet (Darood). Being perfectly on the footsteps of the Holy Prophet, he guides and instructs his disciple exactly like the Holy Prophet did. The Holy Prophet started guiding the sacred Companions from the house of Al-Arqam (the first Islamic school). He taught them the knowledge of the Quran, wisdom, made them cross different trials and gave them different kinds of responsibilities. Well, the Holy Prophet would enlighten the spiritual self of the sacred Companions after they would cross various stations while going through spiritual and physical ordeals through his powerful spiritual sight instead of forty days worship in seclusion and rounds of recitals. Sultan-ul-Ashiqeen Sultan Mohammad Najib-ur-Rehman has established khanqah. It is based on Al-Suffah. It is there that people come from all over the world to meet him and be blessed with the beneficence of his sacred being. Some seekers of Allah perform physical duties there like washing utensils, cleaning khanqah, cooking food for disciples, distributing it, composing books and printing them etc. Those seekers who cannot perform physical duties on account their business and family commitments contribute financially according to the saying of Allah Almighty, “Never will you attain the good (reward) until you spend (in the way of Allah) from that which you love” (Surah Al-Imran-92). They can contribute in any department of the organization created by Sultan-ul-Ashiqeen Sultan Mohammad Najib-ur-Rehman. Contributing this wealth is to spend in the way of Allah. Apart from aforementioned duties educated seekers of Allah are given responsibilities accordingly. Some among them write articles based on spirituality and mysticism and others translate books of the spiritual guides of Sarwari Qadri order from Arabic, Persian and Punjabi to Urdu and English. This is a way to get the point and knowledge across of gnosis of Allah. This is also striving in the way of Allah by pen. Physically seekers of Allah are busy in these tasks but spiritually they are engrossed in the invocation and contemplation of Ism-e-Allah Zaat. During physical and spiritual endeavours the sincere seekers of Allah find their innerselves sanctified by the spiritual sight of their perfect spiritual guide Sultan-ul-Ashiqeen. This sanctification is felt clearly by them. His blessed company and spiritual sight frees from the traps of the world, inciting innerselves and Satan. The seekers are then set on the path towards Allah.

Different questions arise in the mind of the seeker when the theophanies of Ism-e-Allah Zaat start to descend upon his soul. These make him restless. If he concentrate upon them, they also help him to gain Allah’s gnosis. If seeker does not pays attention these very questions become a hurdle in his way. Sultan-ul-Ashiqeen Sultan Mohammad Najib-ur-Rehman is aware of the spiritual states of his seekers. Hence, he answers all the questions in their minds in simple and easy words in the light of Quran, Hadith and sayings, ways and traditions of Saints. Wonder lies in the fact that his concise yet comprehensive conversation guides the seeker according to his spiritual station. Every seeker finds that it were his questions in mind which were answered. It is also through his books and the monthly magazine titled Sultan-ul-Faqr that he conveys knowledge to seekers of Allah about the way of Faqr. If the seeker cannot understand any important point or answer of his question through conversation or magazine and books, he inculcates it in his inward through inspiration and inward communication. He also creates such means that the seeker always acts according to the will of Allah.

When the seeker strengthens in the invocation and contemplation of Ism-e-Allah Zaat, he is granted Ism-e-Mohammad (sacred name of Prophet Mohammad) to take him from mere vision of certainty (Ain-ul-Yaqeen) to the final level of certainty gained through experience (Haq-ul-Yaqeen). These leads to pleasant effects on the spiritual self of the seeker. It becomes very easy for him to understand and act on the complicated points of Faqr and gnosis of Allah. He becomes from seeker to desired, from Muslim to faithful (Momin) and from Allah’s lover to His beloved.

Sultan-ul-Ashiqeen Sultan Mohammad Najib-ur-Rehman changes the thoughts and ideology of his disciples instead of altering their physical appearances and life styles. He changes their focus from the world to Allah Almighty. He enlightens their spiritual self first rather than reforming them physically. The reason behind this is the soul can reach Allah and not the physical self. He constitutes the spiritual personality to the worthiest of presence in the court of Allah and the Mohammadan Assembly. This is achieved by virtue of the beneficence of his sacred company which can be attended on every Sunday by the seekers of Allah and disciples alike.

He listens to the problems of seekers and guides them on both material and spiritual matters in his khanqah of the Sarwari Qadri order. Additionally, he takes keen interest and also give orders on the ongoing projects and programs of his organization “Tehreek Dawat-e-Faqr”. He in the presence of his wife also meets with female seekers of Allah at his residence on Sundays only. He guides them on complex spiritual matters and prays for them. On these Sundays he also listens and discusses matters with those women who work for the organization i.e. translate books and look after social media matters. He travels to other cities every year for those disciples and seekers of Allah who live there and cannot come to Lahore regularly. It is done in order to meet them and bless them with his beneficent company. Those seekers who live abroad are given time via phone and blessed beneficently. Hence, none of his seekers either living in far flung areas or within vicinity are kept from his beneficence.

The arrangements done by the disciples living in other cities and their hospitality upon his arrival is their trial and accordingly they are blessed.

Ghaus-ul-Azam Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani has said:

  • When my seeker is sincere, he is in my sleeve (i.e. under my protection) and when he does not remain sincere then I am in his sleeve.

It means that he stops him from sins. Sultan-ul-Ashiqeen Sultan Mohammad Najib-ur-Rehman is attributed with this trait because he is Shabeeh Ghaus-ul-Azam (meaning: living portrait i.e. reflection of Ghaus-ul-Azam). Undoubtedly, he is a shady tree (provides shelter and protection from all evils), affectionate father, exemplary friend and a great teacher for his seekers. He forgives their mistakes and shortcomings as he is the most generous. He veils their faults and forgives the seeker even if he commits a dreadful mistake but repents sincerely with a true heart. His method of guidance is affectionate to such an extent that every seeker feels that he cares for him the most. He also does not differentiate among them on the basis of wealth, education and status in society as such material things do not matter to him. Like the rule of Allah and His Messenger, for him exaltation comes with piety (taqwa). Like the sun he equally showers his beneficence among his disciples. It is the land of inward which receives beneficence and becomes fertile according to its competence.

Allah has blessed him with such an exalted status that it cannot be estimated by anyone. Despite this he presents himself as a simple man. He also trains his seekers such that humbleness becomes their distinctive trait. He says:

“Humbleness is the biggest weapon against Satan.”

Whenever anyone asks him for Faqr, sincerely, he blesses him with this treasure without making him cross hardships or endeavours and notwithstanding the fact that he belong to which religion class or sect. Oath of allegiance is obligatory for it.

عنایت تو دیکھو میرے کامل مرشد کی یارو
کہ جس نے مجھے پل بھر میں لاھوتی بنا دیا

Explanation: How marvelous are the blessings of my spiritual guide who took my soul to our original homeland which is the realm of absolute Unity (Alam-e-LaHoot) within blink of an eye. It is there where souls achieve their purpose.
